ALBEMARLE SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON

HISTORY: JULY 2003 TO JULY 2004

The Albemarle Sail and Power Squadron was chartered effective July 1, 2003. Previous, the Squadron's first meeting was held at Perquimans County High School on April 19, 2003, with John Ernst, AP, as acting Commander. The Squadron's Petition to USPS (national) for its charter, approval of Bylaws, and election of a Bridge were approved. The Squadron, under the capable direction of Allen Miles, AP, had already conducted its first Boat Smart Course several weeks earlier. Three Pamlico Squadron visitors, Dunlap, Hatala, and Heidel advised the twenty-four members present concerning several USPS programs: Vessel Safety Examination, education, and Cooperative Charting. Byron Kehayes, S, of Edenton, North Carolina, was elected as the Squadron's first Commander.

The Squadron conducted six general membership meetings during its initial year. In addition, the Bridge (Executive Committee) met monthly. A Squadron Burgee (annexed) was adopted which reputedly garnered great interest and approval at the National meeting. The Squadron also participated in the District Cooperative Charting program and, under Education Officer Allen Miles, conducted an active public and elective education program throughout the year. Field trips were conducted to the Regulator Marine sport fisherman manufacturing plant in Edenton, NC, the US Coast Guard Base - Elizabeth City, the Airship Technologies blimp manufacturing and maintenance plant, located on the Pasquotank River south of Elizabeth City, and Norfolk Naval Base.

By the end of the Squadron's first full year of operation membership had increased to over fifty individuals. At present, a majority of these reside in Perquimans county NC; however, a concerted effort is ongoing to gain new members from throughout the Albemarle region.

ALBEMARLE SAIL & POWER SQUADRON BURGEE

The design incorporates the red Cross of St. George on a white background overlaid with the silhouette of an Osprey in blue.

The Cross recognizes the English roots of Edenton and the historical impact that Britain had on the Albemarle Sound Region.

The Osprey is a strong local symbol and the color blue represents the water's influence on the area.
